Special Events
In addition to regular Pack and Den meetings, outings and campouts, there are other special events that occur throughout the year. Please consult the Pack 688 Planning Calendar for exact dates.
Webelos Woods (October)
Webelos Woods is a District sponsored Saturday night campout designed to give first and second year Webelos Scouts and their parents a preview of the Boy Scouting experience. It usually takes place at a nearby council managed campground like Camp Strake or Camp Brosig. Webelos Woods offers the thrill of camping at a Boy Scout style camp, fostering interest in Boy Scouting. This is an excellent time for each troop to show the Webelos in its area what the troop does and to recruit new scouts for the troop. It is also an excellent time for Webelos to visit several troops in their area, and learn which troop may be the best to join.
Pinewood Derby (January)
Pinewood Derby is one of the most exciting events in Cub Scouting each year. Each November, Pack 688 provides official Pinewood Derby Car kits from which each boy can create his own special race car. The pack derby is held in early January in Hauser Hall. Boys race their cars against each other in heats and overall winners are determined. Trophies and medals are presented to winners in each age group at the January Pack meeting. Golden Arrow District holds a Pinewood Derby later in the spring.
Scout Sunday (February)
Scout Sunday is held in February. Pack 688 will make arrangements with Bethany’s Church to participate in a special Scout Sunday service in February.
Blue and Gold Banquet (February)
Blue and Gold Banquet is an annual awards banquet conducted in the early spring (February) to recognize cubs for their achievements and adults for their contributions to the pack.
Scout Fair (April)
The annual Sam Houston Area Council Scout Fair is the largest exhibition of Scouting in the U.S.. Pack 688 typically mans an exhibit booth and conducts a Cub Scout activity for fair attendees. Hundreds of Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops perform camping demonstrations, teach crafts, and show-off their scout craft. There is also Pinewood Derby races conducted each year at Scout Fair.
Twilight Camp (June)
The annual Sam Houston Area Council Twilight Camp is in June of each year with two sessions available. You can find more information on Twilight Camp by going to related links and reading more information.
