How Pack 688 Operates
Although most of its activities are concentrated during the school year, Pack 688 operates a year-round Cub Scouting program. There is a pack meeting, campout, or summer time pack event every month of the year. Meetings are opportunities for our boys to interact and have fun with older and younger cubs, receive recognition in front of their peers and participate in exciting outdoor adventures.
During the school year, monthly pack meetings are typically held on the third Thursday of each month at Bethany’s gymnasium from 7:15-8:15 PM. Availability of meeting facilities, holiday interruptions and special events may alter the normal monthly schedule. Check the Pack 688 Planning Calendar for event dates.
Campouts or "Pack Overnighters" are planned at least two times per year. There is usually one autumn campout (September through early November), and a spring campout in (March through May). Campouts are special opportunities for families to gather away from their normal routines in a peaceful outdoor setting. Parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts & uncles are all welcome to attend campouts.
In June, July and August, summertime pack events are planned one weekend each month. These are fun outings involving swimming, Twilight camp, Drive-in movies, 4th of July Celebrations, outings to local museums or other local trips. Our goal is to choose outings that are affordable and fun for the whole family.
Meetings
Most of the activities you can expect to participate in are organized and conducted by the leaders and parents in your son's den. Dens usually meet two or three times per month for 60-90 minutes at a time and place convenient to the den families. At some of their meetings, dens may conduct a fun trip to a park, museum, or local attraction. Sometimes Tiger, Wolf and Bear cubs will work on activities related to earning their next rank badge, but most of the achievements and electives are intended to be completed at home. Webelos meetings are more organized and involve more of a focus on specific achievements called activity pins. At every grade level, den meetings should be fun and exciting gatherings where the boys get a chance to sing songs, perform skits, and receive recognition.
Boy Leadership
Some dens appoint one boy to serve as "denner" and one to serve as "assistant denner." Denners and Assistant Denners are usually rotating leadership positions that involve simple but special responsibilities. Denners and Assistant Denners are presented with special gold shoulder cords to wear on their uniforms to symbolize their role. Past Denners may receive a shoulder tab to wear on their uniform through the remainder of the year. Usually this is for older boys to help prepare for Scouts.
